The highly contagious disease is deadly but preventable with a series of vaccinations in The Animal Foundation's low-cost clinic.

Parvo can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and young puppies are the most at risk.

“It's spread through dog feces at places like dog parks. It spreads from dog to dog and can survive on clothing, and other objects in the environment for long periods of time,” said Dr. Ken Sieranski, Director of Shelter and Veterinary Services at The Animal Foundation.

The only way to stop the spread of the virus is to vaccinate your dogs.

“It’s a very preventable disease. Puppies 6 weeks and older needed to be vaccinated for parvo every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 to 20 weeks of age,” said Dr. Sieranski.

Dogs 20 weeks and older that have never been vaccinated require one parvo booster 3 to 4 weeks after initial vaccination. When the puppy booster series is complete the vaccines must be boosted one year later.

If you suspect your dog has parvo, there are certain symptoms to look for.

“They can have vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy,” Dr. Sieranski said.

If your puppy or dog shows any of these signs, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Most deaths from parvovirus occur within 48 to 72 hours following the onset of symptoms.

Parvo can be treated if caught early, but it’s expensive.

“For hospitalization, you’re looking at least $1,000 with all the fluids and medications they require," said Dr. Sieranski.

You can avoid extreme illness and a costly hospital visit for your dog with a series of vaccinations at The Animal Foundation.
